Welcome to Naxos!
The largest, most fertile, and most self-sufficient of the Cycladic Islands, Naxos is a joy to explore, chiefly because there is such a large variety of things to see and so many wonderful impressions to be left with at the end of your journey. It has magnificent sandy beaches, steep mountains, fertile valleys, and some wonderful archaeological monuments and remnants recording its fascinating history.
In modern times, the island has only recently begun to beckon tourists to its shores, primarily because of its self-sufficiency and chief occupation of farming. The island is a producer and exporter of potatoes and onions. They also have a well-known name for producing an excellent variety of local cheese, and some very good local wines and raki. They also make a local liqueur called Kitro, which is made from citrus leaves. Also for local consumption, they have splendid lemons, olives, and a wide variety of herbs.
The last decade has seen a dramatic increase in tourism, and Naxos now has an excellent tourist infrastructure, including a new airport just one kilometer from the main town, with domestic flights to and from Athens. Accommodation will be found widely dispersed throughout the island, both in the main town and at a variety of beaches, and there is very good public bus service, especially during the summer.
