Traveling inland, following the Naxos Town- Kynidaros trail, we meet the Melanes Valley, green with fruit and olive orchards. It is on the way to Flerio Village, past the villages of Kourounohori and Agii Apostoli, that we come across this half-finished statue of the Kouros type, 6.40 meters (26 feet) long (that is, shorter than his fellow at Apollonas to the north, but more detailed). It lies in a private garden near a stream of fresh water, and admission is free from May to October, from about 8 in the morning until sunset. Archaeologists believe that the Kouros was abandoned because one of its legs broke. The valley offers some mansions or family-owned hotels. It is ideal for walking or trekking enthusiasts. In Kalamitsia, it is worth visiting the tower resort of the Jesuit monks, built at the end of the 17th century. The buildings are partly well preserved and it is quite exciting to go around the edifice. A brilliant view from the garden, with its nice palm tree, is waiting at the top of the main building's roof. The nearest beaches are some 10-20 minute's drive away.
