Skiathos (Island)

Skiathos Flotillas at Port

Skiathos Flotillas at Port

Welcome to Skiathos!

In the Sporades group, Skiathos is the smallest in size, yet has the largest tourist infrastructure, and attracts the largest number of visitors to this part of the Aegean. It is also the nearest to the mainland, and probably the easiest to reach, whether by ferry or by plane.

There is no question that this lovely island deserves the attention that it gets. Its beaches are legendary, its lifestyle is quite cosmopolitan, and it boasts of a lovely capital, and many pretty resort-style settlements along its magnificent shores. It’s a bit like encountering Mykonos, but with trees and red-roofed houses! And, like Mykonos, Skiathos has an enormous amount of charm and outstanding beaches, though it is half the size of its Cycladic counterpart.

Skiathos is situated only 40 nautical miles east of Volos on the mainland and is reached by ferry from both Volos and Ai. Konstantinos, and with less frequent service from Thessaloniki in the north, and Evia in the south. It also connects frequently with the nearby islands of Skopelos and Alonissos. During the summer, there are frequent flights to and from Athens.

The island encompasses approximately 48 square kilometers of pine-covered low hills, with a main road running in a southerly direction from the east coast all the way around to the west coast, to about midpoint on the island. This is where you’ll find the best beaches (and there are many!!), with the north coast being accessible only on foot or by caique.

Skiathos is not an island with inland villages; it has the main town and capital, Chora, and lots of little seaside settlements that have been developed for tourism. The year round population totals about 4,000 inhabitants, who live primarily in the capital and occupy themselves with tourism and a bit of fishing.
