Great Archaeological Tour of Turkey
19 Days / 18 Overnights Ankara - Antalya - Assos - Bodrum - Cappadocia - Dalyan - Dikili - Fethiye - Istanbul - Kas - Konya - Kusadasi - Pamukkale
This is the longest guided tour of Turkey, that is unless moving to there! During this tour you will feel sorry for having to leave each and every site, though knowing that the next one will be equally interesting! Classics enthusiasts, lovers of civilization in general, student groups, lovers of Greece and Turkey, you are all welcome. You can combine this tour starting off from Greece, while on extended vacation, with visiting the islands of the Aegean, or flying directly from home. You could also continue your vacation at the end of this tour, flying from Istanbul to Athens, where we will meet you to help you through the rest of your travel, or fly directly home. Any combination is possible. You will find out that, taking away the sight of the many mosques and women hiding their face, it is hard to decide which country is which!
Arrival in Ankara
Ankara at night |
After your arrival in Ankara (Capital of Turkey) via Istanbul our representatives meet you and transfer you from the airport to your hotel. Rest of the day at leisure. Dinner and overnight in Ankara.
(In case you travel to Turkey directly from America or Australia, depending on existing connections, you might skip the Istanbul change of plane) |
Ankara (Tour of the city)
Ankara, Kemal Atatürk's Mausoleum |
After breakfast we visit the Temple of Augustus, built on the ancient Ankara Acropolis by King Pylamenes in 10 AD, as a sign of fidelity to Augustus; it was reconstructed by the Romans in the 2nd century. We continue with Ataturk's Mausoleum and finish our Tour with a visit to the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations. It was Kemal Atatürk's idea to establish a Hittite museum and the state eventually bought the old Mahmut Paşa bazaar storage building and the Kurşunlu Han (caravanserai, or should we say motel for the travelers of the time?). After many years of rebuilding and restoration works (1938-1968), the museum was opened as The Ankara Archaeological Museum, indeed one of the richest in the world!
We return to the hotel for dinner and rest. |
Ankara - Hattushash - Cappadocia
Cappadocia |
After our breakfast we set off for Hattushash, former capital of the Hittites, the "City of One Thousand Gods", 200km (125miles) east of Ankara. We will see the city walls, the city sphinx-gate, the library and government buildings. It is here that more than 30000 clay tablets were found, now kept in Ankara and Istanbul Museums, containing almost the whole corpus of the Hittite Literature. In charge of the excavations is the German Archaeological Institut, but not without problems: in 1917, one of the Sphinxes of the Gate of the Spinxes was transferred to Germany to be preserved, but never came back; it is still kept in the Pergamum Museum in Berlin.
In the afternoon we proceed to Cappadocia. Arrival in Cappadocia. Dinner and overnight at our hotel in Cappadocia. |
Cappadocia
Cappadocia |
After our breakfast we embark on our Full-day Tour of Cappadocia. We drive through Uchisar, whose unique landscape is a combination of ravines and rocks beaten by wind and rain into odd-shaped cones and pyramids. The view of the Goreme Valley is breathtaking. We go on to Zelve Valley, which could be considered as an open-air museum of unique beauty, inhabited until 1960; then to Avanos, to visit one of its famous pottery workshops. Then we return to our hotel to dine and overnight. |
