Welcome to Elounda!
Elounda is the major beach resort linked to the capital of the prefecture, Ag. Nikolaos. It is north of the city by approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), and has some of the finest resorts to be found on the island. It was actually built at the site of an unexcavated port dating to antiquity, the walls of which can still be seen in the sea.
The resort is situated overlooking the Bay of Elounda, and it has fine sandy beaches, many excellent restaurants, lively nightlife, and beautiful scenic views over the bay and toward the tiny island of Spinalonga. This former Venetian fortress and later leper colony is one of the most interesting sites to explore and can be reached from Elounda by frequently departing caiques.
Another interesting excursion from the area is to travel inland by car through the lovely countryside and the Plain of Lassithi, to explore some of the many villages on the high plain. From the village of Psychro, you can visit the Diktean Cave, birthplace of Zeus, and a major attraction of the area. If you need to rely on public bus, then you need to take the bus from Ag. Nikolaos.
