Welcome to Karditsa City!
The city of Karditsa is a small city of about 35,000 people, inhabited before the beginning Historic Times. Modern hotels, combined with older traditional ones, provide a comfortable stay to visitors. The central open-air market is full of life and provides a meeting place not only for the inhabitants of the city but also for people coming from nearby villages. The building of Dimotiki Agora (or Public Market) is one of UNESCO's protected cultural monuments.
The city is also an important Educational center: based here are the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Thessaly, the Faculty of Wood and Furniture Technology and the Faculty of Forestry Technology of the Educational & Technological Institution of Larissa. There is also a Police Academy.
Karditsa has had the privilege of being the first city in Europe to have been liberated from the German Occupation Forces during the 2nd World War. It is a quiet city, where people enjoy going around on bycicles. There is one big park with an oudoor cafe and a children's playground at the city's center, named Pafsilypo, a tell tale name literally meaning the one that "stops sorrow". The city also has several tavernas and "tsipouradika", places where Greek tsipouro is served. Tsipouro is a strong alcoholic beverage that, because it lacks any additives, can only add to the drinker’s “kefi” (high spirits), without the risk of a hangover the following morning. Of course, it takes a special "meze" (tidbits) to combine with tsipouro and, as a result, until very late in summer nights, a feasting atmosphere is created based on the most genuine elements of our folk tradition.
At the city's center there is the Picture Gallery, housing mainly works of local painters. Scenes of traditional life and portraits of local simple people add to our perception of the region's past.
Karditsa is a good place to base yourself for exploration by car. You have the amenities of the city with several areas of interest all within a 30-45 minute drive.
