Hersonissos (Chersonissos) Town

Welcome to Hersonissos!
This very well-developed resort area lies 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) east of Heraklion, and only 30 minutes from the airport. Frequently, you might find it spelled as Cheronissos, but technically, that is the name of its port. Originally, its inhabitants were primarily involved with agriculture, which they still embrace during the winter months. But, this resort has become so popular that tourism is definitely their main occupation during the summer season.
With beautiful beaches, an outstanding choice of bars and eating facilities, and a wide variety of accommodation, from luxury hotels to smaller self-catering facilities, just about everybody is involved in tourism, one way or another. Several of the highlights of the area would certainly include its lively nightlife, water sports activities, and access to nearby traditional villages and archaeological sites. It’s also an excellent choice for families with children, as most hotels offer lots of attractions to entertain the kids. In addition, it features the largest water park in Greece, which is an exciting recreation for the entire family.
Just a few of the nearby villages to explore are Ano Hersonissos, an excellent showcase for Cretan architecture; Avdou, a traditional Cretan village; the hillside villages of Koutouloufari and Piskopiano, with their lovely village atmosphere; and Thrapsano, where they make the Cretan clay pots. Also, the area’s close proximity to Heraklion, with good and frequent bus service, gives you the opportunity to visit this bustling city without having to stay there.
In addition to the beaches and facilities of Hersonissos, you can also venture along the coast to Stalida and Malia. Stalida (also referred to as Stalis) has a very nice relaxed atmosphere and superb sandy beaches. Malia, slightly further east along the coast, also has gorgeous sandy beaches, though is probably more well known for its archaeological site and, by contrast, its very lively and noisy nightlife. Exploring the ruins of the Minoan Palace will be worth your time, especially if you don’t have the opportunity to visit Knossos or Phaistos.
All in all, the Hersonissos resort area is perfect for people who want a lot of activity, a well-developed tourist infrastructure, and a very hectic nightlife. This isn’t the place to choose if you want to be alone, but it’s a good choice if you want to have a lot of fun.
