Zakynthos (Zante) Solomos Sq. The church of St Nikolaos seen 'on the Mole' .
Welcome to Zakynthos Town!
The town of Zakynthos is situated in one of the most beautiful spots of the island between the hills of the Castle and the Exidaveloni (=sixty needles). The few buildings that survived the great earthquake of 1953 serve as a testimonial of the superb Zakynthian architecture.
Wandering around the Alexandrou Roma Street, Lomvardou Street, the district Gefyri, Solomou square, St. Mark’s square and the district of Faneromeni is the best way to enjoy the Zakynthian civilization and perceive its course through the ages.
Solomou square is in the center of the city surrounded by nice buildings where public services and museums are accommodated. There you can see the statue of Dionysios Solomos (great poet who wrote the Greek National Anthem). You can also see the Municipal Library and the Cultural Center. The Municipal Library contains more than 60,000 rare volumes about the history and folklore of Zakynthos. The ground floor of the same building is the Museum of National Resistance with significant historical exhibits.
On the south side of the square you can see the Museum of Byzantine Art with exhibits of Eptanesian and Cretan art of the 16th and 17th century. The artwork is of Byzantine style influenced by the Italian Renaissance. There you will also have the opportunity to see the miniature of the city of Zakynthos before the earthquake. At the same square you can also see St. Nicholas’ church which was built in 1561 by Zakynthian marines and is the only Venetian building that still exists in Zakynthos.
Following Democratias street from Solomou square, you will get to the triangular St. Mark’s square. It was there where the popolari burnt the Libro d’oro which contained the names of the nobility and planted the Tree of Liberty.
