This small fishing village on the south coast of Crete, 35 kilometers (21.7 miles) south of Rethymnon, has recently been turning toward tourism. It has combined its small village atmosphere with plenty of traditional tavernas and bars along the seafront.
The area offers several small and clean sandy bays, with a predominantly gray colored sand, has an area for windsurfers, and features a few side trips, such as the Monastery of Preveli and the nearby beautiful Venetian village of Spili.
A lovely day can be spent exploring the coast further eastward, with a stop at the Frangokastello Castle, and visits to the beautiful beach of Preveli (take a peddalo up the river). Accommodation in Plakias runs from small hotels to self-catering units.
