Welcome to Eretria!
To come here, you have followed the southward road from Chalkis. Eretria is also accessible by ferryboat from Οropοs.
Eretria, in ancient times, was the second most important city on the island, after Chalkis. It was a major maritime power, and the standard of its intellectual activities was high. The ancestral homes of several renowned seafarers still stand in the town.
In the museum there are finds dating back to prehistoric, archaic, classical and Hellenistic times. Eretria, though, is by no means "just" another important archaeological site! It has, thanks to its fantastic beaches and climate, evolved into a busy summer resort with a fine tourist infrastructure. Accommodation, entertainment and food facilities are characteristic of every Greek seaside summer resort, and Eretria is no exception.
