Alykes Beach
Welcome to Alykes!
Alykes Potamou is a resort which has shown spectacular growth in recent years. It is the first beach we come across when traveling north from the city of Kerkyra, just 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) distant. Alykes, in Greek, means Salterns (salt works), and it is exactly what this place used to be; the relevant installations are still to be seen behind the buildings along the seafront. The area is very nice, and the sandy beach is one of the most sought after on the island (perhaps because of its proximity to the city of Kerkyra). The tourist infrastructure is pretty well developed, with hotels of all categories. Of special interest is the Kapodistrias Museum, exhibiting the personal possessions of the first Governor of Greece as a free State, a diplomat of international recognition in the first three decades of the 19th century.
