This small port on the east coast of the mainland is fast becoming a major point of departure for ferries and Highspeed boats traveling to the Cycladic Islands from the mainland. Still a fairly sleepy seaside town, the area has been slowly increasing its level of accommodation, and now offers accommodation of both three and two-star categories.
It is the port nearest to the new El. Venizelos International Airport, and is an ideal location for an overnight stopover for outward-bound visitors to the Cyclades, who have perhaps arrived at the airport too late to catch the last ferry to their island destination. That also applies to inward-bound travelers, who may have early flights and need to leave their holiday islands the day before their flight departs.
The main seafront by the pier, and the main square near the Avra Hotel, offer eating facilities, including fresh seafood, and there are boat ticket offices on the main seafront road where you can easily purchase your ferry tickets. You’ll find a taxi rank there, and the public bus stop for both the airport and for traveling to center city Athens. The small public beach is pretty decent, and not far from Rafina are the villages of Mati, Nea Makri, and Marathon.
