Welcome to Cape Sounion!
When traveling to Cape Sounio (or Sounion) by road from Athens, the drive will take you along the beautiful Attica coastal highway, passing through some of the most desirable Athenian suburbs and seaside resorts, such as Glyfada, Voula, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, Aghia Marina, Fokaea, Lagonissi, and Anavissos. It is a stunning scenic drive, overlooking the Saronic Gulf and the islands of it; stopping for a swim along the way will be very tempting. The coast has some outstanding resorts, excellent restaurants and tavernas, and beautiful countryside views as well.
Situated at the most southern tip of the mainland of Greece, the Temple of Poseidon stands sentry overlooking the Aegean, a symbol and reminder of the great cultural heritage of the country, and a welcoming beacon to ships approaching from the south. Austerely occupying its own promontory and acting as gateway to Greece, one cannot help but feel in awe of its simple beauty, and be moved by its powerful presence. Whether approaching by land or by sea, the monument never fails to evoke a strong emotion, always accompanied by silent contemplation and admiration of its strength and enduring legacy.
For centuries this outstanding monument to the god of the Sea has bid hail and farewell to countless ships sailing its waters. It has signalled a safe harbor ahead for those arriving, and wished God-speed for those departing. It also enjoys one of the most breathtaking panoramic sunset views in the world, one you just should not miss. A very difficult decision awaits you: to stand at the majestic temple to see the sun go down through the eternal columns, or to enjoy a sunset dinner at one of the picturesque, serene seaside tavernas under the cliff!
