Agios Ioannis Beach
Mykonos St. John's Beach |
Welcome to Agios Ioannis!
Just four kilometers southwest of Mykonos Town, on the peninsula overlooking Delos, this area has an excellent sandy beach, outstanding, high-quality accommodation, a relaxed atmosphere, and superb views of nearby Delos and the rugged southern tip of the peninsula. It is actually the nearest you can get to Delos while still being on Mykonos.
Its tiny shallow port was in use for at least three and a half thousand years. Being nearest to Delos, it was here that ships connecting Delos to Mykonos must have docked. It is the location where the Paramount movie "Shirley Valentine" was filmed.
Of major importance is the Agios Ioannis (St John's) twin chapel, after which the whole area of the promontory was named. Please notice the marble plates covering the "osteophylakeia" (ossuaries) in the chapel's thick stone walls. They have the names of the dead carved in them. This practice is due to the land shortage: every available inch of land was to be cultivated for the islanders to make a living from, so long term interment could not be a solution. Given the fact that cremation is not an accepted practice in Greece, this was an almost perfect way out!
