Mykonos Town (Chora)
Welcome to Mykonos! |
Welcome to Mykonos Town!
The center of all the action, the heart and soul of the island, this is where you will find the majority of restaurants, bars, shops, and major tourist infrastructure of the island. Whitewashed houses and balconies full of colorful flowers, a myriad of tiny back alleyways, charm and character at every twist and turn, Mykonos Town more than lives up to its legend.
It is the ideal location for visitors who want to be centrally located, within walking distance of all of the attractions, near to the public bus stations, within steps of the small caiques to the distant beaches, and close to the boats departing for magical Delos Island. The main port is located here, and the airport is only three kilometers away. The School of Fine Arts district is located here, offering a variety of accommodation in one of the quieter areas of town, and with a fantastic view.
A lot has been said and written on the influence of Mykonos Town's architecture on its visitor's psyche. This is really a question that can have at least as many answers as the number of persons addressing it! Let us wax philosophical for a moment and offer you our own opinion, for what it's worth!
In most cities of Europe and America, architecture tends to become monumental, no matter its style, stately or elegant, it imposes its bulk upon you and is supposed to address and honor Heavenly or Worldly Masters. The more it fills the individual with awe, the better the purpose is served. Not so on Mykonos!
Here you may have to stoop down to enter a home or a chapel, yet your soul feels light. Here you can walk around and experience the impact that humble architecture has on you, built at Man's height, by free people who do not crawl to meet their Master, but who dare to look their God in the eyes. This feeling can penetrate and ease one's soul at the deepest level possible and can produce the utmost relaxing effect that one can ever experience.
