Santorini Fira Panoramic View of Nea Kammeni from Fira
Welcome to Fira!
Fira Town (or Thira Town, as it is also known) is the capital of the island, its commercial center, and features one of the most spectacular vistas overlooking the Caldera and the famous volcano that once destroyed so much of the island.
The town is filled with shops, restaurants, bars, and hotels and pensions offering centrally located accommodation. Here is the terminus of the now famous cable car that transports visitors to and from the island’s port, Skala. The degree of wining and dining facilities in the town is of a very high standard, and the nightlife is abundant and lively.
Whether buying or browsing, a walk along “Gold Street” (Ipapantis Street) is a must, as is the magnificent walk along the edge of the caldera, even more impressive when done at night.
The town has an extremely good tourist infrastructure, and most of the services that you need will be found here. Most of the ferries arriving and departing the island now dock at the port of Athinios, south of Fira Town, and there is regular bus connection to the town. The port of Skala is now primarily used for cruise ships, yachts, and excursion boats. The island’s international airport is located approximately seven kilometers from the main town.
