The city, 220 kilometers from Athens and a bustling commercial center and capital of the prefecture, is built along the southwest, pine-covered slopes of Mt. Othris, near the Sperhios river. The municipal buildings, hotels, and tavernas are centered around Lamia's four main squares, each of which has its own distinctive feature - the cathedral; plane trees and fountains; the statue of the Revolutionary hero Athanasios Diakos; and the statue of the Greek evzone, a traditionally-costumed Greek liberation fighter of the beginning of the 20th century.
The Lamia museum has an interesting archaeological collection of Classical and Hellenistic finds, pottery, sculpture, statues, and Geometric figurines. It is housed on the first floor of a renovated, two-story building on the summit of the hill northeast of modern Lamia. It was erected by Otto, the first king of Greece after the War of Independence (1830s). It served as a barracks until World War II. In 1973 the Ministry for Defense conceded its rights over both the castle and the ruined barracks to the Ministry of Culture. In 1984 the Municipality of Lamia undertook the repairs. In 1991 the offices of the 14th Ephorate for Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities were moved to the southern half of the ground floor. The Museum was inaugurated in September 1994. Since the structure has been characterized "preservable," it is not possible to add extra rooms.
