Kalambaka Town
Kalambaka Town |
Welcome to Kalambaka!
This small town, on the right side of the Pinios River, which flows down from the Pindos mountain range and into the plain of Thessaly, is built at the foot of the breathtaking rocks of Meteora. Meteora literally means “hanging (suspended) between the earth and the sky,” a both poetic and factual description of reality.
Hundreds of thousands of visitors pay a visit to this unique place and feel the awe of these monasteries built on top of the precipitous rocks, some of them only accessible through rope-ladder or hoistable rope nets. Places of worship, ark of cultural treasures, these monasteries dominate Kalambaka Town and are impossible to understand how they could ever have been built on these virtually inaccessible boulders.
A satisfactory tourist infrastructure includes hotels, rooms for rent, restaurants and tavernas for visitors to rest on their way up or catch their breath on their way down. The cathedral church of the Dormition of Our Lady, northeast of the town, is well worth a visit.
