Agrinio City
Agrinio Megali Chora |
Welcome to Agrinio!
Agrinio is the greatest residential, economic and social center in northwestern Greece. It is inhabited by about 100,000 people, and it is built on top of the ancient town of Agrinio. Agrinio, in antiquity, is certain to have existed as early as the sixth century B.C.
The city is situated in a great plain irrigated by the Acheloos River. Water surplus is stored in five lakes (a blessing to the local economy), and the whole area is a rich agricultural production center. Tobacco growing and olive tree plantations are, by tradition, the main fields of local interest.
Agrinio citizens, especially of the younger generation, play an active role in the economic and social activities of Greece while, at the same time, they respect and preserve their cultural heritage. The city is proud to have a University and an Archaeological Museum, with exhibits consisting of finds from local excavations. There is also a municipal library frequented by students.
As is the case with all parts of Greece, one can witness signs of the uninterrupted presence of Man since antiquity. Ancient theaters, monasteries, churches, ancient and medieval castles and forts are scattered around, signs of an unbroken cultural chain. To the nature-loving traveler, the striking contrast between the strict mountainous surrounding and the serene calmness of the river, the lakes and the openness of the cultivated plains in between is bound to enrich him with unforgettable memories. For flying enthusiasts, a visit to the local aero-club may turn out to be very interesting, with all of the air-gliding, parapenting and aeromodeling activity taking place.
