Amari Village
Amari Village |
Welcome to Amari!
Inland and away from the sea, 40 kilometers (24.8 miles) southeast of Rethymnon, you’ll encounter one of the many highlights of any visit to Crete, the traditional mountain village. Amari is one of the prettiest and oldest villages of the area, with beautiful Byzantine churches, a Venetian bell tower, old houses with red tiled roofs, narrow winding alleyways and outstanding views of Mt. Psiloritis.
Other nearby villages worth visiting are Monastiraki, Thronos and Opsiyias. At Monastiraki, you can explore the ruins of an old palace dating to 1700 B.C. There is the Elenon site nearby, where we can see the relics of a prehistoric neolithic settlement. At Thronos, you can visit the Asomaton Monastery.
The entire area is a delight for those who appreciate nature and wish to enjoy an authentic Cretan village.
