Kythira Sightseeing

Although Kythira is by no means a major tourist destination, it is a beautiful and interesting island on which to have a relaxing vacation. A relatively small island, it can be visited and enjoyed in a short period of time. Here are some suggestions.

The seaside village and port of Kapsali has two beaches and a monastery dating to 1592, where St. John stayed before leaving for Patmos.  Working your way north on the main road from Chora, you’ll arrive to your first village, Livadi.  The village has some interesting architecture, including some English manor houses and a church from the 12th century, plus an old bridge with 13 arches.  From this village you can branch off toward the coast and, after approximately 7 kilometers, you arrive at the old Monastery of Panagia Mirtidion, which is situated amid pine trees and overlooking the sea.  From there, the next village that you come to, Milopotamos, is without a doubt one of the prettiest on any island, with its streams of running water and the old watermill, all set among ancient trees and colorful flowers.  Below Milopotamos Village are the remains of another Venetian Fortress dating to 1560, with ruins of old houses still situated inside.  From here, you can reach the cave of Ag. Sophia, with stalagmites and stalactites, a small lake, and a chapel.

You can continue north and visit Potamos, the largest village on the island, and a very attractive one, with traditional architecture, a lovely square, lots of churches, and plenty of pine trees.  Next is the very pretty village of Karavas, ornamented with lots of greenery, and not far from a lovely sand beach called Plateia Ammos, which now brings you to the east coast of the island.  Just further south is the once main port and resort of Ag. Pelagia.  Here, you will find restaurants, beaches, and lovely seaside views.  Taking the road further south on the way back to Chora, if time permits, you have the opportunity to continue some explorations in the center of the island, which may include the villages of Aroniadika, Frilingianika, Mitata, Viaradika, and Fratsia, as you work your way again toward the east coast to visit Paliopolis and Kastri, the ancient settlements of the island.  Continue to Avlemonas, a lovely picturesque harbor with a Venetian fortress.
