Syros Beaches
Syros is blessed with some lovely beaches on its south, west, and east coasts, specifically among them, Azolimnos and Vari to the southeast, Megas Gialos, Possidonia, and Finikas on the south coast, and Galissas and Kini on the west coast. The beaches of northwest Syros are the most difficult to reach, and the northernmost of them, Grammata, is of archaeological importance, with inscriptions carved on the rocks dating from the Roman and Byzantine periods. The southern and western parts of Syros are the most densely inhabited.
Starting from Ermoupolis and working southward, you will arrive at the
beach
of
Azolimnos
, only 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) south of the city on its east coast. It’s a fine sandy beach with tavernas and accommodation, and with views looking across to the nearby
island
of
Tinos
.
Further south and 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) from the capital is the lovely
beach
of
Vari
, which offers accommodation and restaurants, and has a handy mini market. Megas Gialos is the next stop, and it too has good sand, accommodation, and restaurants. Moving along toward the west, you will arrive at Agathopes, a nice beach, with many neoclassical houses in the area.
Just afterward and moving up along the west coast, the
beach
of
Possidonia
is one of the most well-organized on the island. It has a fine sandy surface and has a good infrastructure for holidaymakers, with accommodation, restaurants, cafes, a mini market, and a diving center. Finikas, the next major resort area, has a lovely marina, plenty of accommodation, and many eating facilities.
Further up the coast and only 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) from Ermoupolis on a direct east-west road, you will arrive to Galissas, a large resort with a long sandy beach, water sports, a great variety of accommodation, restaurants, snack bars, and a mini market. The last popular beach is Kini, a small fishing village with a good sandy beach, plenty of restaurants and tavernas, accommodation, and a mini market. |
