Lesvos, Kalloni Bay Habitat

A large bay with shallow brackish zones, small freshwater marshes, saltflats and saltpans. There are also some Olive stands and pine (Pinus sp.) forests. The main human activities are agriculture, forestry, salt production, cattle raising, fishery, hunting, and recreation. There are some scattered settlements. Area: 12.000 ha

Hunting is prohibited in part of the area.

Breeding species include (or possibly include) the Little Bittern Ixobrychus minutus, the White Stork Ciconia ciconia (5-10 pairs), the Ruddy Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea, the Honey Buzzard Pernis apivorus, the Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus, the Golden Eagle Aquila chrysaetos (1-2 pairs), the Booted Eagle Hieraaetus pennatus (1-5 pairs), Bonelli's Eagle Hieraaetus fasciatus (2-4 pairs), the Peregrine Falco peregrinus, the Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus, the Avocet Recurvirostra avosetta, the Stone Curlew Burhinus oedicnemus, the Collared Pratincole Glareola pratincola, the Common Tern Sterna hirundo, the Little Tern Sterna albifrons, the Eagle Owl Bubo bubo, the Kingfisher Alcedo atthis, the Middle Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos medius, Reuppell's Warbler Sylvia rueppelli, Kreuper's Nuthatch Sitta krueperi, and the Masked Shrike Lanius nubicus.

It is also an important area for the passing herons, birds of prey, waders, gulls and terns. At winter, the Bittern Botaurus stellaris, the Great White Egret Egretta alba (40), the Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus (300), the Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus ruber, the Hen Harrier Circus cyaneus and the Spotted Eagle Aquila clanga make their appearance.
