Open-air Vegetable and Fish Weekly Market

Such markets are set up weekly in all regions of Athens (and all other Greek cities) Monday through Saturday. You don't even have to speak Greek to take advantage of the high quality and the low prices. Here is how it goes: you approach any bench, you pick one of the lot and a plastic bag is righ away handed over to you by the sales person. You pick as much of the merchandise as you like, you put it in the bag and, when you have finished, you hand it to the salesman. Your bag gets weighed, you are informed of the price, of course you understand nothing, but you hand over to the sales person a twenty Euro banknote. He or she keeps as much as the goods cost and you are handed back the change. Alternatively, you hand out a handful of small change, the sales person picks as much as he or she is supposed to, you are thanked and you put the rest in your pocket. If you avoid to buy just one banana or two oranges, nobody will understand you are not Greek! Your change is seldom wrong, and never on purpose!

One should leave the cell-phone at home because, if one wants to make the best choice, you need both hands!
