Athens General Photos

There are enough hills and high buildings in Athens, not to mention the Hymettus, Parnitha and Pendeli mountains framing the city, for the photographer to shoot general city photos. In this album we have included some of them, generally descriptive ones. The visitor must have in mind, though, that the beauty of Athens, as in most metropolitan cities, is not very apparent in pictures of this sort. Its beauty lies with its diversity and its ages-long cultural heritage, as well as with the mentality of its inhabitants, with whom you will most likely encounter promenading the city's streets. The personal touch is always nicer than simply looking at somewhat myopic photos.

From the Acropolis and the Areopagus

Athens NE from the Areopagus Hill The Plaka district and the Roman Agora archaeological site is nearest to the photographer. The hill to the right is the Lycabettus Hill; the low one to the left is the Strefi Hill and the one behind it is called Tourkovounia. Mt. Pendeli, full with marble quarries from the antiquity until recently, frames the horizon to the NE.

Athens North from the Areopagus Hill Nearest to the photographer is the church of Aghii Apostoli and the Stoa of Attalus, NE end of the Ancient Agora archaeological site. The northern end of Tourkovounia is visible to the far right, behind the Strefi Hill; the mountain to the left (i.e. north) is Mt Parnitha (or Mt. Parnes)
